In the early spring tulips are the first flowers which take the stage. They appear right after the last drifts of snow seep into the soil. However it is not that necessary to wait for spring in order to start growing tulips. You can grow your tulips in the bed, under the shrub, in the cevices of a rock garden or in container.

Tulip bulbs need to flower. It should be mentioned that the white, onion-like bulb which is located around the bud stores  contains all nutrients essential for the spouting and growing of the bulb. In order to improve the growth tulips should be generously watered and the soil should be properly moisted.

The main rule concerning the bulbs selection is the bigger the bulb the bigger the flower. You should give the preference to plump bulbs which are firm and heavy for their size while bulbs that are withered, overly dry, scarred and have traces of mold, soft spots or other blemishes should be avoided.

However the most difficult task for every gardener is to choose the tulips for the garden from the over 100 varieties of tulips which are divided into 15 groups. If you manage to select the appropriate flowers from different divisions you will be able to create a tulip garden which will bloom from early spring till the end of May. 

1. Single Early
These tulips have short stems with height of about 8 inches. They flower in late March and early April.

2. Double Early
The flowers with beautiful petals which have a 12 to 15 inch stems can make your indoor area more attractive. Blooming from early to mid-April these flowers are more delicate than other cultivars, so it is crucial to provide the protection from cool and inclement weather.

3. Triumph
These flowers were named by Dutch breeder, N. Zandbergen and were breeded since 1923. The tulips are blooming from the end of April as they tower to 18 inches high.

4. Darwin Hybrids
These garden tulips are one of the tallest species with a height over 2 feet. Usually organge and yellow, these flowers are great for naturalizing your garden area.

5. Single Late
Also known as Cottage tulips they have been  inter-mingled and successfully merged with Darwin hybrids. As wel as the Darwings these hybrids can have the height of more than 2 feet and can be viewed in May.
