| Herb Garden Design | Such gardens where we can grow vegetables, flowers, fruits and medicines are called herb gardens. Herb garden designs can be useful or ornamental depending on the kind of plants grown in them. Practical as well as ornamental, formal herb gardens laid out in simple beds date back to medieval Europe and continue to be popular today. It is very easy and inexpensive to maintain a herb garden. Some common plants grown are rosemary, parsley, sage, marjoram, thyme, mint, rue, angelica, bay and basil. Moreover, herbs used can be differentiated as: Medical, Culinary and Ornamental herbs.
The most popular culinary herbs are parsley, rosemary, mint, basil and others. These kinds of culinary herbs are very easily to grown. And there are annual and perennial varieties of culinary herbs. Many people also like to grow medicinal herbs. But you should know that extracting the medicines from them is not an easy procedure. Ornamental herbs are also known as useless herbs. This kind of herbs has no medical value. But we like them because of their beauty.
Traditional herb garden designs do not always suit our modern needs. Some of the preferred designs today are as follows:
• Herb container gardening
If you just a beginner, so this type of gardening is the best bet. Container herb gardening are very easy to manage. Moreover, they are flexible enough to be often changed. Containers and pots of different shapes, colors, and texture can add a character to your garden. There are a lot of herbs which are better to keep indoors during winters, so they can be brought in without any problems and mess.
• Parterre
This type of design gives a formal and elegant look for your garden. This is a common technique used in most herb garden designs. You have to simply segment your garden into different areas for different herbs you plan to grow and hedge them in. Planting of herbs in threes and fives allows the eye to register the plant and move over to other groups without troubling our vision.
• Raised bed herb gardens
This type of garden design is a great technique which allows us to amend the soil, since many herbs require more drainage than what the soil can allow. Because such plants as mint or weed can prove troublesome if planted loosely without planning. And raised bed herb garden designs can help here.
• Roses
Roses are one of the earliest and original inhabitants of the herb gardens. Rosa rugosa is a great rose for the herb garden both historically and aesthetically. Moreover the foliage of the herbs provides a perfect foil for the rose blossom.
Remember, your herbs will need sun, but not so much that they burn. Nothing is better than fresh herbs. And with an indoor herb garden being so easy to setup, there's no excuse for not having them always. Herb garden designs are not too hard to maintain and can be done even by a beginner who would acquire the skills in the process.
