The no dig garden is a fertile garden bed that doesn’t need to be dug at all. This garden should include clean, organic materials that will literally compost around your growing plants.
You are able to allocate this garden anywhere because it is built on the top of the ground. The no dig garden is very beneficial for areas with poor soil or weed infested areas. If you have no wish to dig a patch this garden can become a great choice for you.
The location for the no dig garden should receive at least 5 hours of sunlight a day. You should also install drainage.
If you chose a hard surface it is necessary to put down some cushioning organic material first. It can be seaweed or leaves.
How to build no dig garden First of all you should place the layer of newspaper (no colour printing) which is at least 6mm (1/4 inch) thick. Install the border material around the garden area. You may use bricks, logs, planks or rocks which should be at least 20-25CM high (8-10 inches) to contain the organic material within.
Fill in all the gaps with a layer of lucerne hay to a height of 10cm (about 4 inches). Then place some good organic fertilizer on top to a height of 20mm (1 inch), for example chicken, horse, cow or sheep manure.
After that you should place another thick layer of straw (150mm or 6 inches) and a layer of fertilizer and the put a 100mm (4 inches) of compost on the top.
The garden should be watered until it is soaking. Then you should let it settle for a few days before you start planting.
You need to use seedling in the no dig garden. They will grow very quickly in the rich, compost top soil.
As the garden bad matures you should continue to layer mulch. However the bed mustn’t be dug over, you need to layer more and more material as required. You should regularly rotate your crops and add fresh compost.
Your no dig garden will give consistent and amazing results season after season.
