Common Mistakes in Landscaping Design

Examine the four mistakes in landscaping design which are often made by the do-it-yourself landscapers and learn how to avoid them in your project.
Common Mistakes in Landscaping Design

Many people try to learn different interesting techniques in order to save more money. Landscaping is a perfect example of this. Homeowners design their landscape by themselves and don’t hire professionals but their lack of expertise can create a lot of problems.

Professional landscapers know their job very well. They have a good knowledge in composition and plant grouping. They understand the features of the soil and what elements will be beneficial for complementing the design of your home. Any average do-it- yourself landscaper can’t become a professional in this field.

There are several landscaping mistakes which are repeated very often. Here are four most widespread landscaping errors.

1. Mistake connected with linearity.
People who design their landscape by themselves start their project with a thought that the world consists of only rigid lines of grid.  In fact the surface all over the world is not flat or square in most cases it is bumpy and curvy, it undulates and sways. Professional landscapers understand this problem and solve it by working within the natural lines. All the “imperfections” of nature are used to heighten the aesthetic appeal while do-it-yourself landscapers try to create square and straight lines. This straightening is not beneficial and creates the uninviting and severe atmosphere. You should play with natural lines.

2. Neglecting the front yard.
Most people try to create the private space in their yard. They spend a lot of time in the back yards and don’t pay much attention to the front of the house. As a result larger areas in the back yard are required. If you exclude the front yard from your landscaping design your home won’t look attractive and valuable. Your front yard should be also designed properly.

Example: For a few years the shrubs, which have been planted right under the bay window, will have a great look. After that they should be trimmed every week. There is three feet of clearance between ground and window but your little shrubs will grow ten feet high if not held in check.

Such problem is very common for do-it- yourself landscapers. They are not thinking about the future. You should study the characteristics of the plants: how they look now and how they will grow in the future. If you have the knowledge you will be able to create a beautiful garden.

4. Ignoring the desires and suggestions of your family members concerning the design of your garden.
The major mistake of most homeowners is to design the landscaping project without taking into account the desires of the members of the family. For example the wonderful winding path to the garden which you want may cut right across the kids’ favorite place to play ball. You should consider the preferences of the other people and don’t assume that your amateur vision is perfect.

It is possible to design the landscaping project by yourself. If you work very hard you may achieve a professional look if you learn how to avoid these mistakes.
