Foundation Plantings

Get to know about the purpose of foundation plantings in the landscaping and read the useful recommendations which can help install them properly so that they could complement and enhance the existing design of your landscape.
Foundation Plantings

Generally speaking foundation plantings are simply beds of plants (often dominated by shrubs) which homeowners install along their house foundations. Here are the three main constituents of classic foundation plantings:

   1. Plantings for an entryway design
   2. Plantings on the corners of the house foundation
   3. And plantings that bridge the gap between these

However, in fact, the majority of foundation plantings which people may encounter will not conform to this tripartite model.

Traditionally the purpose of using foundation plantings is to hide  the raised house foundations prevalent at the time in some regions.

Today most people prefer not to install foundation planting because house styles have changed (less house foundation to hide).

The benefits of the use of foundation planting in the landscaping design:
1. While a raised house foundation may be unattractive, a long uninterrupted wall of vinyl siding isn’t especially appealing, either.

2. Foundation plantings is a great way to soften the hard lines of a house, even one with attractive siding.

3. Newly-built homes are sometimes plunked on an expanse of lawn devoid of mature trees. IT will be beneficial to use foundation planting in order to quickly counteract this rather bleak look.

4. If the landscape area is very small you may just plain need the extra space if you enjoy growing a particular shrub!

5. Foundation plantings consisting of evergreen shrubs which are very energy efficient. This means that if you use evergreen shrubs as foundation plantings you can reduce heating costs by creating something of an insulating dead air space around a home's foundation. For, even if just a few inches of concrete foundation are exposed, that's a potential route for cold air to enter your house. The insulation value provided by a foundation planting is minimal, yes; but every little bit helps!
