Start with Herbs
You need to begin your project by selecting low-growing herbs. You should pay attention to the scale of plant material for your fairy garden. The plants should create the miniature landscape and make it manageable. Most plants of this kind grow very slowly and you can maintain them by trimming them back. You should keep in mind that plants in containers grow slower than if planted in the garden.

The ideal and most commonly used plants for the fairy garden include: variegated or green myrtle, which is very small when pruned; dwarf pink autumn sage, it has small, compact green leaves and beautiful pink flowers in summer; lemon-scented geraniums, which serve as small upright trees with their 1/2- to 3/4-inch crinkled, dark-green leaves; and creeping savory, which can be easily shaped into a small bush.

Selecting a Container
The most important factor in choosing the container for the fairy garden is that it could provide a proper drainage from the bottom in order that water could serve the roots and escape. This will prevent the roots from being costantly wet. Give the preference to durable hypertufa troughs and pots which can withstand various weather conditions and won't blow over.  Containers come in various shapes and sizes which can fit perfectly to any landscape and the small plants in them will be noticeable among the mod of other plants on the ground.  You can buy the throughs or make them by yourself. They are made from a mixture of Portland cement with peat moss and perlite.

A great choice can also be terra cotta pots and window boxes because they offer proper drainage and come in a huge variety of sizes and shapes. You can also use the saucers of the larger-sized pots to make charming gardens for fairies. Most garden designers love to use old, weathered clay pots because the discoloration on the sides adds more character and interest to them.

A wooden window box can be also a nice choice, it will accent a deck or patio. Give the preference to boxes made from sturdy, long-lasting redwood or cedar. It is crucial to create adequate drainage holes like in any other container.
