Fairy Gardens

Soil Mixture
The potting mixture plays a very important role because plants which grow in containers can't recieve all necesary nutrients which are found in natural garden soil. In spite of maintaining nutrients for plants you should consider the stability of the container. Your mixes should be lightweight, dry out quickly and don’t keep the pot from blowing over in the wind. The factors like porosity, adequate drainage and water retention (depending on the type of plant and its requirements) should be kept in mind while preparing the soil mix.

2 parts sterilized soil

1 part peat moss or compost

1 part perlite

Planting, Care and Maintenance
When you have selected the appropriate container and plants you need to fill half of your pot with the soil mixture and after that start planting the herbs and plants. Once the planting job is finished you can add accessories to the container. You need to create the landscape: place a path, trellis, chair or pond and complment them with a fairy-sized trowel, rake, watering can, hoe or wagon. Use small clay saucer filled with water to create a small pond, and pea gravel, wood chips or broken clay pots can pave a path. Leave about 1/2 inch of space at the top edge of the container for watering.

Sunlight is a finishing stage in creating your fairy garden. You should leave it for 6 to 8 hours in a sunny spot. If you do this projects in summer you need to water them daily. Monitor this according to the light and temperature. It is recommended to water and let the pot dry out between watering rather than keeping the roots wet. You should trim the plants regularly so that your fairy garden could look neat and tidy. When the plants are at the stage of active growth you can add organic fertilizers. During the cool seasons you should bring your fairy garden indoors before a first frost and place it on a sunny window.

Placing Your Own Fairies
As it is really difficult to find real fairies you can add the store-ought inhabitants to your garden.

You can find fairies in many shapes, sizes and materials. Fairies constucted from poly resin are the most durable and serve you for many years. The ideal height is  3 to 5 inches. You need to stabilize each fairy by glueing them to a bench or a chair or they can be stuck to a place with the attached rod or stick with which they often come equipped.

You should use your imagination and be creative while designing your fairy garden. Miniature details like fences and garden tools or fairy figurines draw attention. Mothers and daughters, grandmothers and grandchildren, friends, coworkers and family can get together and enjoy an evening of fun and chatter while planting their own pots. The process of creating your fairy garden should bring you and your family a lot of enjoyment.

You shouldn't forget that fairies are very small creatures so your garen should be small too. You can create tiny garden beds fairy-size with small boxwood, a little river rock bed because fairies love shiny things and fuchsias, since both fairies and hummingbirds like the bright blossoms and yuor fairly garden will attract all kids living in the neighborhood.
