Creating a Circular Garden

Generally most yards are rectangular however it is not obligatory to conform the landscaping design to that shape. A circular garden is a great option to soften the straight lines of an ordinary yard and create a beautiful focal point like a stunning Italian ceramic urn.

circular_garden_1You can create a beautiful circular garden with a ceramic urn as the focal point and surround it with rings of colorful flowers and stone pavers in a sunburst pattern. Egger the landscape designer recommends to choose a design that fits the mood you wish to create. Circular designs are informal and can soften the lines of a yard while rectangular or square designs are considered as more formal.

This design project is very simple and can be completed in one short weekend. A professional would charge about $2,000 for the materials, labor and plants (excluding the cost of the focal point, which is a very personalized item and whose cost can vary greatly). However, do-it-yourself gardeners can spend only $600 on materials and plants.

Step One: Preparing the Space
Landscape contractor Paul Williams chooses the size of location of the circular garden- 11 feet in diameter for this yard. He recommends that a circular garden shouldn’t be too big because it can overwhelm your yard but also don’t choose a space which his too small.

First of all you need to clear the site of any plants and shrubs. When removing and transplanting shrubs it is crucial to dig up enough soil and the entire root ball in order to protect shrub from the trauma.

Using a tape, measure the width of the outer circle and mark the circumference with landscapers' spray paint. Then mark the smaller inner circle where you put the planting bed and urn.

Step Two: Laying the Flagstone
It is recommended to choose Connecticut bluestone pavers  in order to create the sunburst design. You are able to get pavers cut to whatever length which will fit best the design of your site.

Lay out the stones in a way that their best side could face up between the inner and outer circles, four inches apart on the inner circle to achieve a radiant effect. Than,  take a sharp tool and score around each one and set the stones aside. Dig out a 1-1/2-inch bed for the stones, it is important that they could be flushed with the ground. Then place the pavers into the holes and fill them with dirt around the edges as needed. Make up sure that each paver is level and the surface you have created is even.
